Medieval Greece
Arrival of Christianity and rise of Byzantine Empire
Modern Greece
Climate of Greece
Despite its small size, Greece has a varied climate.
Most of the country, including all coastal areas, enjoys a so-called Mediterranean climate, almost identical to much of California. Summers are hot and dry with a 7-month period of near-constant sunshine generally from April until November. The remainder of the year is characterized by a relatively cold, rainy period which generally starts sometime in November and lasts until late March or early April. Sporadic rains do occur during the dry season, but they tend to be rare, quick showers. The country’s Ionian Coast and Ionian Islands tend to receive more annual precipitation than the rest of the country. The islands in the southern Aegean and parts of the southeastern mainland are the driest areas of the country.
The most pleasant weather occurs in May-June and September-October. The warmest time of the year starts in mid-July and generally lasts until mid-August, when the annual meltémi winds from the north cool the country. Mid-July to mid-August is the height of summer, and the midday sun tends to get very strong; during this time, most Greeks avoid heavy physical activity outdoors between 1PM and 5PM. It is best advised to get in tune with the local way of life by waking up early, doing all sightseeing and errands in the cool morning hours, and then spending the afternoon in the relaxing shade or at the beach. In fact, the bulk of tourists arrive in Greece during the height of summer, to do just that! For visitors from more northerly climates, the off season from November through February can be a rewarding time to see Greece. It will not be beach weather, but temperatures are mild. The much added bonus is that there will be very few other tourists and reduced prices.
Summer evenings tend to be very rewarding. As strong as the sun may get on a summer afternoon, the low levels of atmospheric humidity in most areas of the country prevent the air from trapping much heat, and temperatures tend to dip to very pleasant levels in the evenings. But even during midday, high temperatures actually tend to be quite comfortable as long as the time is not spent doing a lot of walking or other physical activity. (Athens, however, can still be uncomfortably warm during summer afternoons due to the predominance of concrete in the city, an effect similar to New York City.) Coastal areas near open waters (away from tightly-closed bays and gulfs), especially on many of the islands, tend to be quite breezy, and can be quite cold at night.
While the Mediterranean climate characterizes most of the country, two other climate systems are present. One is the cool Alpine climate which is found on mountainous areas of the country's interior, including many high-altitude valleys. Another system is the Continental climate found on the interiors of north-central and northeastern Greece, and gives those areas very cold winters and warm, relatively humid summers.

Kalamata Olive Tapenade
My family can trace its roots back to Kalamata, a beautiful city located about 148 miles southwest of Athens and looks right into the messenian gulf.
And yes, it’s where the Kalamata olive comes from and yes, that’s why we only use these types of olives for this recipe (yiayia would have it no other way!)
The Kalamata olive is a dark brown little gem that are meaty and come with pits. They are divine and olive oil made with these tend to be considered some of the best in the world.
This recipe really brings out their flavors in a simple way.
I have been consuming this dip ever since I can remember. It’s so simple and goes great with bread.
When you begin making this dish, make sure you get Kalamata olives that are pitted. If you throw ones that have pits in you food processor, you’ll be in for a surprise.
While there are many versions and many people use green olives or a combination of olives, I always make them using these.
What you will need:
2 cups of Kalamata olives, pitted
2 teaspoons of Greek olive oil
2 teaspoons of red wine vinegar
1-2 cloves of garlic depending on preference
Directions (Super easy!)
1. Place everything in a food processor and blend until paste forms.
2. Remove, put on plate, and serve with bread!
- Serves about 2-3 people
Summer mountain adventures in Greece
Greece is better known for its sea and islands, but its many lush mountainous regions, often rising dramatically out of the sea, are an exciting and off the beaten track adventure travel destination. Each mountainous region in Greece has its own unique allure, with striking geological features, plentiful local culture and history, as well as amazing adventure travel possibilities.
Trekking
Many of the old routes that wind their way through the Greek mountains have remained in their original condition and are explored by trekkers.
Mount Olympus, the most famous of the Greek mountains, rises to 2,917 meters. It is known as the home to the 12 Gods of ancient Greece and a UNESCO designated Biosphere reserve; evidently promising of some mythical hiking, you might bump into Zeus along the way. There are a large number of trails, some existing since antiquity, like the one starting from a small village called Dion.
Nestled between Mounts Pelion and Olympus is Mount Kissavos. Kissavos’ west side faces the great Greek fertile plain of Larissa while, to the east, its creek-veined slopes drop down into wonderful beaches.
The E4 European walking route goes right down the middle of Greece and traverses Crete, while the E6 walking route snakes along Greece’s northern border. The less adventurous might want to try walking the E4 down through the Peloponnese or Crete, rather than traversing the more difficult northern region.
Canyoning
Greece’s mountainous regions are also perfect for those looking for a harder challenge – with the assistance of the many certified mountaineering associations, like the Hellenic Federation of Mountaineering & Climbing, you can get useful information on where, and how best to explore Greece’s mountains and canyons.
Canyoning down waterfall licked gorges is also popular – Mount Pelion is ideal for the exhilaration of canyoning during the morning and relaxing by the sea at night. Did you know Greece also has the world’s deepest gorge? The virgin Vikos gorge in the Pindus mountains of northern Greece is known for its pristine waters and varied ecosystems.
Cave Exploring
If you want to explore Greece’s underground majesty, look no further than Crete’s White Mountains(Lefka Ori). They are home of two of Greece’s deepest caves – Gourgouthakas and the Cave of the Lion, which extend more than a kilometer into the earth. Many other caves in Crete’s prefecture ofChania have both geological as well as historical importance!
Mountain Biking
All of Greece is haven for mountain bikers – and you needn’t go farther than Parnitha, Athens’ northern mountain border, for some good riding. The area around the Tatoi Palace is a family-friendly biking destination just an hour away from downtown Athens. The Hellenic Mountain Bicycling Association is a great way to start if you’re planning a Mountain Biking holiday in Greece.
Offroading
Many offroading trails are to be found all over Greece – from mountains to beaches, Greece’s extensive gravel road network connects them all! You won’t have any problem finding an off-road tour either in mainland Greece or in Crete, and you’ll reach some breathtaking destinations that few people are lucky enough to experience!
Easter Holy-days in Rethymnon
Holy Monday
At the beginning of the Holy Week, decks of playing cards would be hung from the ceiling of village kafeneia, so as to declare abstinence from entertainment. This might be one of Eastern traditions that is hard to find in modern Crete, but a number of others remain alive –as I was to discover during my week-long journey.
Holy Tuesday
Spring endows Crete’s meadows with a huge variety of edible wild greens which locals use smartly for their traditional fasting dishes. Nikos and Lola Frantzeskakis from Vamos taught me how to tell my lapatha from my kafkalithres and how to spot asparagus stems by the roots of olive trees. Moving from the fields to the seaside, we used a knife to gently remove petalides (sea shell), from the rocks and to collect kritama (Crithmum maritimum), an edible green. The catch of the day was then cooked in a portable traditional clay oven on the beach.
Holy Wednesday
I attended mass at Saint Irene’s monastery where people participated solemnly, holding a candle in their hands. Equally impressive with this beautiful monastery whose history dates back to the days of Venetian rule, were the elaborate wreaths that nuns weave with palms to adorn their church during Holy Week.
Maundy Thursday
Easter baking typically starts on Holy Thursday. Eggs, milk and butter –ingredients that people abstain from during Lent- are used to make Easter biscuits and Easter bread. Mrs. Katina and two of her friends, aged 90 and 84, were kind enough to share their expertise with me. They prepared biscuits of different shapes, and kneaded tsoureki, a sweet yeast dough that needs to rise several times before it is ready to bake. Mrs. Katina then summoned her grandsons to take one pan full of biscuits and another full of tsourekia to a wood-oven bakery for baking and the old city of Rethymnon smelled of Easter.
Good Friday
I joined a group of senior ladies at Kiria ton Aggelon, Lady of Angels, church at seven in the morning, to participate in the decoration of the Epitaphios, the symbolic bier of Christ, with fresh flowers. I felt mesmerized watching Mrs. Aristea’s gentle and dexterous movements as she patiently fixed white carnations, laurel and purple orchids onto the bier.
That same night, I was very happy to see that the Epitaphios of Kiria ton Aggelon was the most beautiful of all four Epitaphios that meandered through the city’s Venetian alleys to meet in Four Martyrs square.
Holy Saturday
The first thing Katerina Xekalou, Cretan cuisine expert, told me about local gastronomy is that it is smart and simple. It also is rich in symbolism. On Holy Saturday some people will only eat snails dipped in vinegar, in memory of the vinegar that Christ was given to clench his thirst while on the cross.
On Saturday night, I drove to Argiroupoli to watch the burning of Judas. The boys in charge of the event said that they did not manage to find enough branches this year. Yet a pile almost five meters tall rose outside the church, with Judas dressed in Barcelona’s FC gear on top. A little before midnight, the whole thing burned up in a spectacular flame, overshadowing the celebration of the Resurrection.
Easter Sunday
Morning mass started at Kiria ton Aggelon and then the priests, accompanied by Rethymnon’s philharmonic band, walked the alleys towards Megali Panagia church, where mass was completed. City people opened their doors and windows to greet this walking procession with a candle in their hands.
Later on, lamb was spit roasted either above the fire or opposite to it, in a style that is unique to Crete. Celebrations, accompanied with singing and lyra playing, lasted all day long.

Olympic Flame Lighting by Greece
Ancient Olympia, July 20, 1936, 12 noon: The Olympic Flame is alight for the very first time by the Greek sun at the sacred and historic site of Ancient Olympia.
Ever since, the unique event of the Flame Lighting Ceremony has acted as herald for the Olympic Games worldwide. The Sacred Flame travels the country where the games are to be held and burns for as long as the Olympic Games last, as a strong reminder of the land that gave birth to them.
The ritual of the Lighting, in simplicity and mystagogy, starts with the procession of the priestesses from the Altar of Hera, in front of the goddess’s temple. Dressed in archaic-style clothing, priestesses surround the Altar while the High-priestess, invoking god Apollo, lights the torch, using a concave mirror. According to the Myth of Promytheus, the fire is the symbol of life, rationalism and freedom as well as inventiveness and so had been the ageless flame that used to burn on the Altar of Prytaneion in Ancient Olympia.
Then, the High Priestess relays the flame in a small ceramic pot and heads to the Stadium with all priestesses in procession. They pass by the Olive Tree, where they stand for a moment and “Amphithalis Pais”, the young boy (whose both parents are alive) cuts off an olive branch, as a symbol of peace and a meaningful winner’s prize. When the procession arrives at the Stadium, the High Priestess lights the torch of the first runner and the torch relay begins. The Olympic flame travels to many places and becomes the connecting bond among people, sending the message of hope.
Let’s listen to the thoughts and feelings of the High Priestess in anticipation of the unique event of the Olympic Flame Lighting Ceremony, which is to be held on May 10, and will draw the humanity’s attention to Olympia.
“Just a while before the sun sends its rays to light the flame of the Olympic Games, thousands of images and feelings come before my eyes and my soul abounds in them…… A great culture, which once gave birth to ideas, values, important advocates of those ideas and events, enriches the course of history and humanity. The light of Olympia signals the creative force in the hearts of people which generates culture. The flame; a force of nature, a symbol of life and a source of inspiration.
How many feelings, how many unique moments in the cycle of priestesses who convey images from the past, symbolisms, the concept of art…
Sacred silence
Let the sky, the earth, the sea and the winds sound.
Mountains fall silent
Sounds and birds’ warbles cease
For Phoebus, the light bearer King shall keep us company
…waiting for the moment that these words will sound in the sacred land of Olympia, carrying the essence of the team’s soul in my voice and the power of its heart in my hand… just before the invocation to Apollo who will send the rays of the sun and to Zeus who will bestow peace to all peoples on earth and will wreath-crown the winners of the sacred race…”

A trip to the cosmopolitan Mykonos
Mykonos/GNTO
I will never forget the pleasure I got from choosing Mykonos as a vacation destination in 2011 once again over the last 5 years. The reward that blessed place gives me each time I visit it is unimaginable.
It proves each time its talent to combine various aspects of life and reward you with magic moments and memories written to your heart forever. Whether an academic, an archeologist, a historian, an artist, a playboy, a single or a couple, gay or straight, a party animal or an intellectual soul, young or old, everybody will treasure the place each for their own purpose.
Mykonos/ Anastasia Kiritsi
Mykonos is world known from the golden age of Hollywood 60’-70’-80’s,when famous stars like Paul Newman, Brigitte Bardot etc started to visit the picturesque little island of Mykonos and first appreciated its beauties and simplicity with the harmonious architectural design of white traditional houses overlooking the sea, its magnificent transparent waters and its warm hearted inhabitants.
To set foot on a place with such a history thrills me. Mykonos’ position in the ancient times was significant thanks to Delos island, which was the first business capital, where we still see the remnants of the ancient civilization. Visitors go there by boat or yachts, as it is roughly 20 minutes away from Mykonos.
The island attracts celebrities and worldwide jet setters that enjoy the splendid beaches of cosmopolitan Psarrou with luxury Nammos restaurant, but also quite beaches like Agrari, Agios Sostis, and Fokos where I enjoyed a horse riding by the rocks near the small river, admiring the wild scenery.
Mykonos/ GNTO
Mykonos proves to be a star, in many fields. Great gourmet restaurants and amongst so different cuisines we chose to dine at the Cavotagoo’s hotel restaurant by the pool, watching the splendid sunset. The night went on at Caprice bar, in Little Venice, with an apple martini and a lot of dancing to all new and old hits, watching people parading in front of the splashing water. But the night wouldn’t finish so quick; we continued to Jackie O’ gay bar, that was so crowded because of the drag queen show. The night continued at Cavo Paradiso club where we had invitations for the vip area luckily, since no seats were available without guestlist as a famous dj was perorming that night. Needless to say we left the club around 9 in the morning and went directly to the Kalo Leivadi beach as if sleep was our enemy.
Mykonos/ Anastasia Kiritsi
Late in the afternoon as soon as we woke up, we went for a fabulous freddo espresso coffee at Blu Blu cafe overlooking the Harbour and Mykonos town. In the evening we were invited at the summer cinema for the official presentation of the latest movie shot in Mykonos- many international movies were filmed there such as‘’The kings of Μykonos” of Peter Adrikidi, 2010 – where I had the opportunity to participate and have a memorable time with all my favourite actors such as Kevin Sorbo (Hercules) Zeta Makrypoulia etc.
Mykonos Hora/ GNTO
After spending another month there finally by mid of October we left the island sailing on a Catamaran yacht heading to Athens accompanied by dolphins jumping happily under the clear sky and the crystal blue waters of autumn Aegean…
What to do in Athens with 5 euro
Athens is multi-faceted. This gives everyone, regardless of age, mindset, style or budget, the ability to fit in and experience unique moments. And anyway, doesn’t the saying go, the best moments in life are free? Well, let’s find out more about what one can do in Athens with only a five euro bill.
- Visit the Acropolis Museum
Ah, one of the finest architectural diamonds and best museums worldwide. You will be impressed, no matter how many times you visit. Over and over again, the feeling one gets is overwhelming – admiration and awe take over. With the exhibition area occupying 14,000 m2 and the exhibits numbering 4,000, it is understandable that one visit cannot cover all this beauty. There are always details waiting to be discovered. The light coming through the glass engages in a playful motion with the surfaces and the night casts a magical veil on the past and the dynamics of the space. You can only be taken aback by its everlasting splendor.
- Ride along the coastline
Athens Riviera: Faliro, Glyfada, Voula, Vouliagmeni, it doesn’t matter where to – just climb on the tram or the bus line that takes you there and rush to the calling of the sea. Leave the madness of the city behind and relax by viewing the amazing Saronic Gulf. If the weather is appropriate, take a swim and lay on the beach with company, or with the company of a book. If the water is not yet warm enough, get lost in the endless horizon listening to your favorite mp3 music. Whatever the case, the ideal time to begin your ride is just before sunset.
- Eat ‘vromiko’ downtown
As the daylight evaporates, the canteens start getting their fast food ingredients ready. The smell of grilled meat takes over the surrounding streets and neighborhoods, capturing the people that move among them. The sandwich is called ‘vromiko’, which in Greek means ‘dirty’, because it is generously stuffed with full-fat ingredients that create delightful bites. The canteens are scattered in various downtown spots, but the most popular is in Mavili Square, where, after all-night partying, the night walkers gather to claim a tasteful epilogue to their fun.
- Coffee or ice-cream in sunny Plaka
Strolling in Plaka is always dreamy, even in the winter. It feels like travelling back in time, in a different era lost in the present. Narrow streets, alleys, neoclassical buildings, the feeling of an old city, the history – all beaming under the eternal light of the Acropolis. Plaka is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful areas where you can enjoy your coffee or ice-cream, walking between the present and the past. It is a real joy that you can experience so much at such a low cost. Plaka will always offer its, literally, priceless magic to the visitors…
- Visit a book bazaar
A journey to the parallel world of books, not only for those capable of reading between the lines! From time to time, the area of Zappeio, Klafthmonos square, Dionisiou Areopagitou Street, host the most famous outdoor book bazaars where you can lose yourself in the pages. With free entrance and special low prices you can buy a rare edition and a book you wouldn’t want your library to miss. These bazaars are not permanent, so you’d better watch out for their opening dates.
Alternative Tourism on the island of Naxos
Naxos is the largest island of the Cyclades. The rare beauty and the particular topography make it the only island that does not look like the rest of the Cycladic complex. The island combines the Cycladic beauty (blue waters, beautiful white houses, cobbled streets and picturesque neighborhoods) together with a touch of the Sporades and the Dodecanese islands, given that the dominating vegetation of the major two mountains, Za and Fanari incur the backbone of Naxos. Its rich geographical relief creates dramatic changes of scenery, which coexist harmoniously on this small piece of land and give Naxos the rarity it deserves. This island is a very fertile piece of land with lush vegetation in the hinterland and impressive sandy beaches, several kilometers long each one. Due to the rotation of the landscape, of the valleys, the unique seas, of the fertile plateaus and the beautiful trails, Naxos became one of the most ideal destinations for action and alternative tourism.
HORSERIDING
In Naxos you have the unique opportunity to ride a horse and explore the entire island. Available horses and horse-pony for children are waiting to offer you one of the best experiences of your life. In this unique way, you have the opportunity to explore the fascinating sights of the island, pass through valleys and trails and cross the beach.
HIKING
Naxos is famous for its monuments, its fertile plateaus, its valleys, its rivers with waterfalls, its olive groves and vineyards and finally for the wonderful trails which have been created as a result of these different landscapes. In the hinterland, there are numerous paths that you should explore and you will be able to see beautiful landscapes that will be engraved in your memory. That is why, moreover, Naxos is a paradise for hikers.
CYCLING
The island is covered by a network of dirt roads and small country roads ideal for cycling. Throughout the whole island, but particularly in its mountainous part, there are routes suitable for every level and preference. Cycling in Naxos is very popular and many of its fans organize excursions on the island. You can join these excursions even if you are not equipped, as the teams will provide you with everything you need.
DIVING
Naxos is unique for diving, fishing or just snorkeling. The bottom is filled with shipwrecks, sunken airplanes, magical caves and stunning reefs. On the island there are two dive centers that provide training and equipment to discover the bottom’s magic whether you’re a beginner or advanced.
WINDSURFING
Wind-surfing is the most popular water sport of the island because of the “meltemi”, the north wind that blows in summer, with an average intensity of 5 Beaufort. There are beaches for all levels (beginners, advanced, masters) and preference (slalom, speed, wave). The beaches of Agios Prokopios, Agia Anna and Vigla Pyrgaki are suitable for slalom and speed while those of Amity and Aliko are suitable for wave. On the beaches of St. George, Agios Prokopios, Agia Anna and Mikri Vigla, there areorganized sports-centers with modern equipment.
KITESURFING
Naxos is one of the most popular destinations for the lovers of kite surfing. On the island apart from the existing infrastructure, the conditions are ideal to enjoy this wonderful sport and for your adrenaline to reach high. The kite surfing learning centers provide you with IKO certification (International Kiteboarding Association) and as a result you can rent equipment on most I.K.O. centers. In addition, you have the opportunity to attend classes to become a trainer and learn the secrets of this fascinating extreme sport.
The unique Santorini Vineyard
The vineyard fructifying in Santorini’s arid environment is historic and one of a kind. Covering an area of about 1,400 hectares, it starts smoothly from sea level and ends in terraces on the Caldera, at an altitude of 150-250 metres. It is ancient, as are its varieties. Excavation findings in the prehistoric settlement of Akrotiri, reveal that grapes were grown on the island at least since the 17th century BC. The prehistoric vineyard was destroyed by the great volcanic eruption around 1600 BC.The new igneous soil gave birth to another vineyard, around 1200 BC. Therefore, we wouldn’t exaggerate if we said that it is more than 3,200 years old, since it has been cultivated non-stop during all this time.
The vine and wine have played a fundamental role in the island’s economic, social and financial life for centuries. Vines are self-rooting (not grafted), live more than 50 years, and grow on the porous ground, rich in pumice and porcelain. From ancient times to this day, the vineyard is being renewed in the same way, i.e. by layering. It was never infected by phylloxera (vine louse).
The vines of Santorini are real works of art, and their ancient pruning technique is quite exceptional. Many factors have contributed to the development of this technique: the sandy soil, the strong winds blowing at spring, and the hot summer sun. Varieties in Santorini include the white Asyrtiko (cultivated at a percentage of 80%), the best known variety of the Mediterranean grapevine, and, in smaller quantities, Athiri and Aidani, along with other local varieties. Among red grape varieties, Mandilari and Mavrotragano are the most prominent. From mid-to late August you can attend to the harvesting process. In the old times locals used to call it vedema.
You can taste the famous Santorini wines in the wineries all over the island and in most restaurants. Private wine tours are also organized.
Shipwreck Cove in Zakynthos
On the north west coast of the Greek Ionian island of Zakynthos you will find Shipwreck Cove or Smugglers Cove also called Navagio Beach which is probably the most famous beach in Greece and can only be accessed by boat but is well worth the trip.
This picturesque beach has been photographed and featured in many holiday brochures, travel books and televised advertisements. The boat was shipwrecked back in 1980 after hitting rocks in bad weather while being pursued by the Greek Navy who suspected it was carrying contraband cigarettes.
Those tourists planning to lounge in the sun are advised to bring all necessities with them as there are no facilities in this secluded bay. A sun umbrella is a must, as the heat radiates off the white cliffs and there is no shade on the beach to get away from it, especially at midday.
As you can see from pictures, Shipwreck Beach is enclosed within large steep cliffs which give it this remote, inaccessible feel. Because of that, it is impossible to walk to the beach, instead you will need to take the boat. Frequent boat service to Shipwreck Cove is provided from nearby Porto Vromilocated to the south, or from the Harbor of Saint Nikolas in Volimes, located to the north of Shipwreck Cove. You can also take a boat from island’s capital city of Zakynthos. However when we visited Shipwreck we went on the boat trip run by the Potamitis Brothers which you can catch near the Lighthouse at Skinari.
Best Time to Visit Shipwreck Cove
Shipwreck Cove is one of the most popular sights in Greece. Many travel guides agree that Shipwreck is the most photographed place in Greece, getting even more attention than the Acropolis of Athens or the Parthenon. Because of that, if you choose the peak of the day during high season, chances are good you will have to share this rather cozy cove with thousands of other visitors. In order to avoid overcrowding, go to Navagio Beach either early in the morning or put off your visit until later in the afternoon (at around 3pm).
To get spectacular photos of Shipwreck Cove from above, you can drive up on top of the cliff where viewing platform on the edge of the cliff offers amazing photo opportunities. Most postcard photos are taken from there. To get to the viewpoint, just follow the road signs which read “Navagio”.
When you visit Zakinthos do not miss out on an amazing boat trip to the wonderful Shipwreck Cove
Luxury Sailing in Greece

The islands of the Saronic Gulf, though close to the capital Athens, offer historical treasures, uniquearchitecture and a glamorous, yet romantic atmosphere, which is suitable for families and jet-settersalike.

Easter Vourna Tradition in Rhodes
The residents of the village of Saint Isidore in Rhodes Island maintain a tradition called Vourna and it lasts for 3 days, starting from the Saturday before Easter. Only single men of the village can participate and must obey to some rules. It is a unique custom and it is a great attraction.
On Saturday they gather large tree trunks and light up a bonfire before the Resurrection. In the village’ssquare they hang an effigy of Judas. On the same day they elect a board which is responsible for all the events and judging the participants on the last day. On Easter Sunday, after the Resurrection, the honour of setting Judas on fire is given to the man who is planning on getting married within the coming year.
The participants are committed to visit the Church of St. George on Easter Monday for the reading of the Gospel before it commences. Any of the participants who will arrive during or after the Gospel has began, is noted by the secret police (who remains undercover till the very end of the event) and is obliged to pay a small fine.
For those who will be noted as absent from the Church’s liturgy, a group of young people who have been designated by the Board, will visit their homes and hang a tsoukopana (a special cloth) onto the chimney of their home indicating their absence from the Church and will be recorded as an offense and will eat the appropriate fine.
On Easter Monday the “court” will take place with the board in-charge. They judge one by one the participants who had not respected the rules of this tradition and impose the fines that they must be charged with. Those who refuse to pay their fines are thrown in the cold water of the Vourna (a basin) without any warning. The money raised is given to charity.

The North Tip of Zakynthos
Skinari is the most northerly tip of the Greek Ionian Island of Zakynthos and is near the famous Shipwreck Cove and Blue Caves. Everyone that visits there is enchanted by it.
The natural surroundings are not only spectacular but are also important environmentally. There is a rare plant that is found only here in Skinari and no where else in the world.
At Skinari you will find 2 Windmills, a Taverna, a Lighthouse and you can also take boat trips to The Blue Caves and Shipwreck Cove which are run by the Potamitis Brothers Adonis, Dionisios and Nikolaos.
The two old flour grinding Windmills have been converted into places to stay. You can wander round and enjoy the views from the top of the cliff here and the sparkling seas below.
The views from Skinari are absolutely fantastic. With small boats going in and out of the Blue Caves below and views across the Ionian sea to the neighboring island of Kefalonia.
A little further down the road, past the turn off for the Windmills, is the Skinari Lighthouse. This active lighthouse watches over the crossing between Zakynthos and Keffalonia.
The lighthouse at Skinari in Zakynthos is a great place to take ‘ all in one” boat trips to both the Blue Caves and Shipwreck – at the best price! You can take a combined trip from here to enjoy both the Blue Caves and Shipwreck.
